Common HVAC Challenges in Drummonds

We commonly see a mix of equipment throughout Drummonds, including:

  • Traditional split systems with gas furnaces and central AC

  • Heat pumps with electric backup heat

  • Outdoor packaged HVAC units

  • Downflow systems commonly used in manufactured homes

Each configuration requires a slightly different troubleshooting approach.

Heat pumps, in particular, are more complex than standard furnace and AC combinations. They rely on reversing valves, defrost boards, pressure switches, control wiring, and auxiliary heat strips - which means there are more components that can fail. We’ve seen many cases where systems were misdiagnosed simply because the wiring logic or control sequence wasn’t fully understood.

Tracking down electrical faults, thermostat communication issues, or intermittent defrost problems requires patience and methodical testing. Many technicians are uncomfortable working on heat pumps because of that added complexity. We’re not. Proper diagnosis is critical, especially when a small issue can mimic a major component failure.

Packaged units also require careful inspection since all components are housed outdoors. Motors, coils, capacitors, and control boards are exposed year-round, and rural properties are often exposed to more debris and airflow restrictions when maintenance is skipped.

Understanding these differences allows us to diagnose issues accurately instead of guessing or defaulting to system replacement.

No matter the system type, our goal remains the same: restore performance, improve reliability, and extend the lifespan of your equipment whenever it’s safe and practical to do so.

I'm absolutely impressed with Steven's (Chillax Heating and Air) knowledge, professionalism, and thoroughness. He took time to actually troubleshoot the odd issues I was having with my furnace. New parts were required (bent blower wheel and swiss cheesed blower housing from previous unrelated companies) as part of the repair. One of the parts had to be ordered from the factory due to my specific system. Steven made sure to call, in the middle of the parts wait, to insure I was ok during a cold spell and offered other repair choices in case I was in desperate need. There was no upsell no gotchas on pricing. Very upfront and honest. Pricing itself was very fair for the work involved. Honesty and care are rare in this era and Steven has both in spades.

FAQs for Drummonds Homeowners

Why does my heat pump struggle to heat my home in very cold weather?

Heat pumps work differently than furnaces. Instead of creating heat, they transfer it from outdoor air, which becomes more difficult as temperatures drop.

During colder weather, your system may rely on auxiliary heat or heat strips to help maintain indoor comfort. If the home still isn’t warming properly, common causes include a faulty defrost board, reversing valve problems, or electrical issues.

Because heat pumps use more components and wiring than traditional systems, proper diagnosis is critical before assuming a major part has failed.

Can I do any maintenance myself?

Yes! Homeowners can help their HVAC system stay healthy between professional visits:

  • Change filters regularly – every 1–3 months

  • Keep vents clear – avoid blocking airflow with furniture or rugs

  • Trim plants around outdoor units – leave at least 2 feet of clearance. Be careful not to cut the thermostat wire!

  • Clear debris from the outdoor unit

  • Flush the drain line occasionally – vinegar or bleach can help prevent clogs or odors

Why is my AC running constantly but not cooling well?

When outdoor temperatures and humidity stay high, your system may run longer cycles to maintain the set temperature.

If it never quite catches up, the issue could be:

  • Dirty or restricted outdoor coils

  • Low refrigerant

  • Weak capacitors or failing motors

  • Undersized or aging system

  • Airflow restrictions

  • Duct or insulation problems

A thorough inspection helps determine whether the issue is maintenance-related or a faulty component that needs repair.

How long does a residential HVAC system usually last?

The lifespan of your system depends on the type of equipment, quality of installation, and how well it’s maintained.

  • Furnaces - A well-maintained furnace can run 20–30 years, sometimes more. Most only need replacement if there’s a serious issue, like a cracked heat exchanger.

  • Air Conditioners - With regular maintenance, central AC systems typically last 12–20 years. Replacement is usually only necessary for a major leak or compressor failure.
