Residential AC Diagnosis & Repair in Memphis, TN

Signs Your AC May Need Repair

Air conditioning systems often show warning signs before a complete breakdown occurs. If you notice any of the issues below, it may be time to schedule a professional diagnosis. Addressing problems early can help prevent further damage and avoid more expensive repairs later.

Common signs your AC may need repair include:

  • Warm air blowing from vents when the thermostat is set to cool

  • Weak airflow or rooms that aren’t cooling evenly

  • Frequent cycling, where the system turns on and off repeatedly

  • Unusual noises such as buzzing, grinding, or rattling

  • Water leaking around the indoor unit

  • Ice forming on the copper refrigerant lines

  • The system won’t turn on or struggles to maintain the set temperature

If you’re experiencing any of these issues, a proper diagnostic inspection can help identify the cause and determine the best solution to restore reliable cooling.

Expert Diagnosis & Troubleshooting

Not every AC problem is obvious, and replacing parts without understanding the real cause can lead to unnecessary expenses and repeat failures. Our approach focuses on careful troubleshooting to identify the root cause of the issue. By evaluating system performance, electrical components, airflow, and operating pressures, we can determine exactly what’s preventing your system from working properly.

This problem-solving approach helps ensure repairs are accurate and effective the first time. In many cases, a correct diagnosis can resolve issues without major repairs and help extend the life of your existing equipment. Our goal is always to restore reliable cooling while helping your system continue operating safely and efficiently for as long as possible.

What to Expect During a Diagnostic Visit

When you schedule an AC diagnostic visit, our goal is to identify the problem accurately and explain your options clearly. We take the time to evaluate the system and determine the root cause before recommending any repairs.

During a diagnostic visit, we typically:

  • Inspect the indoor and outdoor components of the system

  • Test electrical components and controls

  • Check refrigerant pressures and system operation

  • Evaluate airflow and overall performance

  • Identify the cause of the issue and recommend repair options

Once the problem has been diagnosed, we’ll explain what we found and review any recommended repairs with you. No work is performed without your approval, and we’re always happy to answer questions so you can make an informed decision about the next steps.

Steven diagnosing an issue with a heat pump package unit in Lakeland

The owner of Chillax Heating and Air Conditioning LLC, Steven, is smart, dogged, and reasonable. I purchased a large heat pump from another vendor in January and by June noticed that my utility bills were three times what they were in prior years. I called the vendor who came out and checked the new unit and said all was fine. I then called another company who refused to come out because they will not service a unit they did not install. I then called Steven randomly. He came out quickly and investigated the unit carefully. After one hour he still had not found the problem, but he did not give up. Eventually he discovered the problem with the unit and fixed the problem quickly. Immediately, my electricity usage dropped by two-thirds. His bill was very modest. Steven clearly gets joy out of solving difficult problems and is not greedy. We will stick with him.

Types of Systems We Service

We specialize in residential central air conditioning systems and have experience with all major brands. We focus on the types of systems most commonly found in homes, ensuring that we can provide expert diagnostics, repairs, and reliable service every time.

✅ Traditional Split Systems

The most common setup in residential homes, split systems use an indoor air handler or furnace and evaporator coil, paired with an outdoor condenser. These systems distribute conditioned air through your ductwork to cool your home. We’re trained to quickly diagnose issues, identify failing components, and perform reliable repairs, keeping your home cool in the Memphis heat.

✅ Heat Pumps

Heat pumps provide both heating and cooling by reversing the flow of refrigerant depending on the season. We’re skilled in diagnosing the unique challenges heat pumps can present, so you get consistent, reliable comfort year-round.

✅ Packaged Units

Packaged systems house all components in a single outdoor unit. These systems are common in manufactured homes or homes without space for indoor equipment. With our expertise in their design, we can efficiently troubleshoot and repair issues to keep them running properly.

By concentrating on these systems, we can deliver highly skilled troubleshooting and repairs that extend the life of your equipment and keep your home comfortable.

What We Don't Service

To provide the most consistent and dependable service, we stay focused on the systems we work on every day.

❌ Commercial HVAC Systems

Commercial systems require larger crews, specialized equipment, and different infrastructure than residential work. Rather than be “okay” at both, we choose to be excellent at one, focusing entirely on serving homeowners.

❌ Ductless Mini Splits

These systems often rely on brand-specific parts that can be difficult to source, which can lead to longer repair times and higher costs. Additionally, these systems are often installed incorrectly, leading to persistent issues that aren’t always visible upfront. That makes it difficult to verify the full condition of the system or stand behind the outcome of a repair.

❌ Portable AC Units & Window Units

In many cases, the cost of parts and labor to repair these units can exceed the cost of replacing them. Because of that, we don’t offer service on portable or window AC units.

If you’re not sure what type of system you have, feel free to reach out. If we aren't able to help, we’re always happy to point you to someone who can.
